Hi everybody. My name is Lynn Hardin and welcome to my podcast and Apple. For today, there was a time when teachers would receive a polished, beautiful Apple set on the side of their desks from their students as a sign of appreciation. I think those days have gone by instead. You're more apt to see a Starbucks card. So I'm bringing back that beloved teacher gift of an Apple in the form of a podcast called an Apple for today. This podcast will provide teachers with inspiration. It will provide them with encouragement, both in and out of the classroom. So welcome.
The subject of this episode is going to be fear, which seems a perfect topic for what is happening in the world right now months ago, if you were to ask any teacher, what was their fear, it would be their PowerPoint, not loading during a lesson or a lesson, not going the way that they had hoped or fear of a child not progressing and learning to read sometimes of a parent sometimes of their principal today, especially on social media and blogs and articles. Teachers are afraid for their lives. They're afraid of contracting this virus and becoming seriously ill or dying.
What really is fear? It's one of the top seven universal emotions that every human being experiences, it comes from a sense of threat or that something bad is going to happen. Some harm. It could be emotional, physical, or psychological. More importantly, it could be really true or untrue or just imagined. There certainly are fearful experiences and our ability to cope with these experiences, lessons, or helps to remove the fear, which we'll talk about later in the podcast. But when we're feeling helpless, like there's nothing that we can do to change the harm. It really only intensifies our fear and from fear comes anger.
Some of the common causes of fear or triggers that might happen to be in the dark. Like when I go into the garage, I just know there's something in the shadows. It could be fear of heights or fear of flying, being rejected in a social situation, fear of spiders or snakes, knives, fear of death and dying, and fear of getting ill and being powerless. Fear is God-given. And it's what our ancestors used to protect themselves. Those that didn't were probably eaten by a prehistoric tiger. So we're hardwired to have fear it evokes fight or flight. When we see some harm or potential danger, we get afraid and it, and it's to protect ourselves. We either fight off the harm or flee from the harm in a situation today with COVID, that's a legitimate concern, but that fear may not be realistic. It may be true that there is a serious virus in this world, but it doesn't mean that we are going to get it or that someone we love will become ill. So it's important to get into the solution and lessen these fears.
A fear worry goes on too long. It turns into anxiety and then anxiety can turn into a disorder where it becomes persistent even to a phobia pill. We don't want anxiety. We don't want fear. It takes away from being our best and so on a small dose and appropriate situation. Yeah. Be afraid. But with what is happening in the world right now, when teachers are saying they're afraid for their lives, and they're being asked to go back into the classroom, let's examine that and look at what can be done about this fear. Wow. That was pretty serious. So how about we get into some of the good stuff and talk about some solutions. I'm an educator. So I am absolutely in love with acronyms. And this is one of my favorites for fear, F E A R false evidence appearing real. It's not true. It's an imagined fear.
Another one of my favorite acronyms for fear, which has to do with the fight or flight is fudge everything and run. Then there is the acronym that talks about solution F E A R is face everything and relax. So let's talk a little bit about, or I'm going to talk a little bit about facing our fears. Fear keeps us safe. It gets a bad rap, but it's not good or bad. It's just a tool that helps us make good decisions. It's not meant to paralyze us. It's not meant to cripple us or cause anxiety to use the acronyms. I provided have a laugh and put your arms around this fear. After you've put your arms around the fear, give it a name. What are you afraid of? Then ask this question. Is this true? Or is it imagined, is it a possibility of something that could happen or is it a promise? It definitely will happen.
So many of our fears are imagined. I'll say it again because it is worth repeating. So often our fears are imagined and only a possibility. Now that we understand more about the fear that it can be imaginary or it could be real. It could be a possibility or it could be a promise. Let's use the same fear to help us to make wise choices. I say this because I believe from the bottom of my heart, we all have options. What works for me may not work for you and vice versa. Anytime I have selected a choice or done an action based on fear, it never really worked out well. It never worked out.
So what I'm suggesting here is take the time to write about it, talk about it and examine this fear and use it to make the choice that is right for you. Sadly, I see a mass Exodus of amazingly talented teachers leaving their profession. And I think it's from unrealistic fear, but I don't know for sure I have compassion for what they must be feeling and what they're going through. But I also know this next generation needs good teachers. So use the fear to select the option that is best for you. The last tool for combating fear in this episode that I want to share with you is having the heart for service. Think of others, get out of self, make a phone call, and see how someone else is doing. And don't talk about yourself. Take dinner to somebody who is housebound volunteer to do some tutoring, make some calls to families and students that are housebound. Think of others and focus on how we can be helpful to ourselves, how we can practice self-care, but it is powerful to get out of self and help others. It could be your team never hurts to help your principal. We always appreciate that when I'm thinking of others and how I can help. I don't notice that I have any fear. There's no doubt in my mind that that's how our first responders those on the frontline of this terrible COVID virus.
